Apologetics Week 1

Jan 11, 2026    Rev. Garrett Hall

Apologetics is not a hobby. It is the church’s Spirit-empowered defense of our hope in Christ, using God’s Word and God’s world. In Week 1, we set the foundation for the entire course by answering the basic question, “What is apologetics?” and clearing away common misunderstandings. This is not about becoming an internet debater or learning how to win arguments. It is about being prepared to answer real questions from real people with real hope in a real Savior.

We will anchor the class in 1 Peter 3:15 and learn what it means to give a reason for our hope with gentleness and respect. We will also explore a clear definition of apologetics and unpack why it belongs to the whole church, not just pastors, professors, or podcast personalities. Along the way, we will talk through common objections that people actually raise and begin building a healthy posture for these conversations that is reverent, reasonable, humble, and dependent on the Holy Spirit.

To help you feel confident and equipped, we will introduce four major “tools” in the apologetics toolbox: classical, evidential, presuppositional, and cultural. You will practice identifying real objections and thinking about which tools might help you respond in a way that is biblical, clear, and loving.

Takeaway: You will leave Week 1 with a biblical vision for apologetics, a clearer sense of purpose for the course, and practical traction for everyday conversations at the kitchen table, in the driveway, and with the people God has already placed in your life.
