Clay relishing status as 'World's Greatest Athlete' |
|
GLENDORA, Calif. (BP)--Bryan Clay is one of the best athletes in the world at hurdling, jumping and vaulting over obstacles. That much was clear after the U.S. decathlete handily won the gold medal during the Summer Olympics in Beijing, China in August.
But there was a time when he couldn’t even clear a playground fence to hug his father.
Clay grew up in a family shattered by an acrimonious divorce. His parents – an African-American father and a Japanese mother who met in Texas and eventually moved their family to Oahu, Hawaii – split up when he was in fifth grade. It was an extremely difficult time for Clay and his younger brother. |
